More and more of us are gardening and beautifying our yards since the pandemic, and an upcoming tour can provide information and inspiration.
To meet the need for information about fruits and vegetables, hardy trees and ornamental shrubs, North Dakota State University will hold a field day and tour from p. Wednesday, Aug. The surroundings are deceptive, as you drive along country roads bordered by corn and soybean fields and turn down a minimum maintenance gravel road lined by a tree belt. When you approach the gate to the farm, the awe begins as you glimpse the facility through trees surrounding the property.
At the center of the farm is the Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum, which has the largest collection of trees in the northern Great Plains. The Dale E. Close by is a fascinating collection of evergreen shrubs and trees in colors ranging from steel blue to deep green. The arboretum is surrounded by fruit and vegetable research plots, where new cultivars are bred or evaluated, and growing techniques are tested.
All of this can be toured during the Field Day tour on Wednesday, Aug. Participants can learn about new fruit crops for North Dakota such as haskaps and black currants. Vegetable growers will see the latest research on peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes.
New this year, the field day will feature CBD hemp grown in a high tunnel as a high-value specialty crop. A light dinner will be available after the tour until supplies run out. The tour is free and open to the public. Where: 29th St.

We can once again enjoy a summer of sharing knowledge in fields and pastures, the sound of insects buzzing under hot Iowa skies as we rekindle the spirit of in-person learning and connection. After a year of virtual-only events, Practical Farmers of Iowa is pleased to offer a summer events season with a mix of in-person and virtual events. We have worked with farmers to build this additional line-up of field days.

COVID protocols prevented attendance by the public last year. Pemberton started the field day in to showcase the ornamental trials for commercial seed companies, local nursery managers and gardening enthusiasts. The Los Lunas center is among 12 agricultural science centers around the state. Agricultural and horticultural research projects specific to the Middle Rio Grande Valley and its surrounding areas will be on display at the field day. We have everything from vegetables, fruit trees and berries, pollinator insect projects, and ornamental plantings, to forage crops and range grasses. During the tour of the farm, presentations will be given on studies involving mechanical chile harvesting, weed control in chile, pollinator plants, beneficial insects and bees, future grape research, cover crops and soil health, soil carbon and gas flux research, and jujube as an alternative fruit crop.
